Deng Ai

Deng Ai (鄧艾, Dèng Ài; * 197 ; † 264 ) was a veteran general of the Wei Dynasty at the time of the Three Kingdoms in ancient China.

Life

He began his service in the army under Cao Cao . As a young officer, he became known for instantly spotting the best spots on the battlefield to station troops and supplies. He was sponsored by Sima Yi and tasked with warding off Jiang Wei's raids on the southern border with Shu .

In 263 he and General Zhong Hui conquered the Shu Empire. Jiang Wei fought her back in Hanzhong . Deng Ai advised leading the army through Yinpin (陰平) pass, but Zhong Hui refused. So Deng Ai set out alone with his troops and was able to achieve great success. He conquered the Shu capital Chengdu and forced the Emperor Liu Shan to abdicate.

Jiang Wei tried to save the Shu Empire after all. He and his remaining troops teamed up with Zhong Hui to march against Deng Ai. But before that they ordered the officer Wei Guan (衛 瓘) to murder Deng Ai.

Jiang Wei's plan didn't work out, and Deng Ai killed him and Zhong Hui. Wei Guan's soldiers fled to Deng Ai, but Wei Guan feared Deng Ai's revenge and murdered him in night and fog.
