history

Floor plan of Denham Castle 1911

Denham Castle was a moth in the Norman style from the 12th century. Their mound was 3 meters high and was in the northeast corner of the facility. The facility is surrounded by a wide moat that encloses an area of approximately 132 meters × 122 meters. The entrance to the castle was on the south side.

The castle probably had its greatest importance in the civil war of anarchy , which broke out when Stephan of Blois (1097-1154) came to the English throne instead of Matilda , the daughter of King Henry I. Stephan later adopted Matilda's son Heinrich as heir, but Stephen's death in 1154 resulted in Desning Castle being abandoned. The newly crowned King Henry II decided to take their castles away from many leading Suffolk nobles because they had supported Stephen in the Civil War. It is believed that Desning Castle was razed , leaving the knight's hall and other buildings in the courtyard. The area was built up until the 1300s, when the plague is said to have led to the evacuation of the castle. The castle owners moved about 1.6 km west to Desning Hall . Today the castle ruins are a Scheduled Monument . Despite previous damage to the castle ruins from modern agriculture, the current owners, Denham Castle Estate , have announced that they will be working with English Heritage on the restoration and maintenance of the site.
