Denise Donatelli

Denise Donatelli (born 1950 in Allentown , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz singer .

Denise Donatelli grew up in the 1950s and 1960s in South Whitehall Township in Lehigh County , Pennsylvania . She began playing the piano when she was three and won a National Music Federation competition when she was six ; For 14 years she had classical piano lessons with Ralph Kemmerer (who also taught Keith Jarrett ). After college, she married and took care of her sons as a housewife. After their divorce in the late 1980s, she moved to Atlanta . There she jammed with Russell Malone ; soon afterwards she had an engagement as a jazz singer at the Ritz Carlton Hotel (in addition to her day job). She later moved to Los Angeles. In 2005 she presented her debut album In the Company of Friends (Jazzed Media), on which arranger / pianist Tom Garvin participated, through Neal Hefti . The album What Lies Within ( Savant Records ) followed in 2008 . She received a total of three Grammy nominations for her albums When Lights are Low (2010, with arranger Geoffrey Keezer ) and Soul Shadows (2012) . In 2013 she was named a Rising Star by the Down Beat Critics Poll in the female vocalist category .
