The Northen Monument

The monument is a listed war memorial in Northen , a district of Gehrden in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony . On mostly simple memorial monument called the annual commemorations Northens place on Memorial Day instead.

The monument was erected southeast of Northen on the western slope of Benther Mountain . The location on Benther-Berg-Weg is now surrounded by residential buildings that were built later.

The monument stands on a green area surrounded by hedges in the shade of several beeches . On the north side it is accessed via a six-step staircase. The monument is built on a square substructure. The simple base is adorned with a protruding lion relief at each corner. Above it, between four stone spheres, stands a large cuboid with stone pillars at the corners. inscription panels are embedded in three of its sides. The upper step is decorated by another sandstone block with a relief of honor garlands carved out on all sides . The front is also decorated with a steel helmet relief. A stone paw cross is attached to the top of the monument .

The memorial inscription reads:

"OUR
FALLEN
IN MEMORY
DEDICATED
THE CHURCH NORTHEN
+ + + +
1914 ✠ 1918
1939 ✠ 1945"

The inscription panels each state the surname, first name, date of birth and date of death for 14 fallen or missing persons in the First World War and 52 fallen or missing persons in the Second World War .
