The monument as Michel fountain

In 1909 the Liebenwerda Warrior Association and Curt Ziehlke, editor of the Liebenwerdaer Kreisblatt, commissioned architect Karl Jost to design a fountain figure. They wanted a memorial that differed in shape from the memorials for war dead that were common at the time. The sculptor Loew from Elberfeld modeled the bronze figure of a 1.35 meter tall “ German Michel ” in the form of a fresh, vigorous, stocky young man who leans on his sword and whom you should see “that he can do it on his own two feet stand. " you should the new German Michel represent " the viehlgeschmähte sleepiness of the ancient Michels is completely foreign. " was poured them in the bronze foundry of Lauchhammer AG . The Dresden sculptor GR König took over the sculpting work. The limestone deliveries and the stone carving work on the well house with a mansard roof was carried out by J. Röder from Randersacker near Würzburg . A water feature was led on the four sides up to the height of the base and ornaments on the upper ends of the pillars represented the allied armies of Prussia , Bavaria , Saxony and Württemberg in the fight against Napoléon III. in the form of soldiers' helmets. The roof top of the monument was designed as a copper imperial crown. The structure was 5.25 m high and the outermost distance between the lowest steps was 4.5 m.

According to the foundation stone certificate , the total costs amounted to 5,300  marks , which were financed from the memorial fund of the warrior association, a collection carried out for this purpose in the city and other donations. On the occasion of a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Sedan , the memorial fountain was given to the city on August 28, 1910 as a gift from the Warrior Association - with the obligation to provide for watercourse and maintenance.

The following inscriptions were originally found on the four sides of the monument:

German Michel, you are awake,
watch out for the new empire!

September 2, 1870
September 2, 1910

We Germans fear God,
otherwise not in the world.

Dedicated to the city of Liebenwerda by the warrior association to its citizens and friends.

During the Second World War , the figure was removed in 1943 and melted down for war purposes.

After the bronze figure was removed, the base of the monument remained empty for twelve years and the fountain was left to decay. In 1955, the museum director M. Karl Fitzkow took on the building and was able to carry out necessary repairs and renovations. The idea was to rededicate the old Michel fountain into a peace monument. Instead of the soldiers' helmets on the four pillars, signs of the branches of business that were of particular importance for the city's history were to be shown:

A sickle with ears of wheat represents the city's farmers . The scales represent the markets that were so important for the city's development. Craft symbols stand for the craft. The cogwheel and fir tree symbolize the urban industry and the tree nurseries located here.

It is thanks to Fitzkow's efforts that a new sculpture was commissioned for the fountain.

In 1956, a bronze figure by the sculptor Dorothea von Philipsborn was used, which was cast in the Dresden ore foundry Pirner & Franz . The 1.20 m tall and 56 kg heavy figure represents the shepherd girl Barbara , who looks dreamily at the water that runs from the two fish she holds horizontally in her hands into the fountain basin.

In the upper part of the fountain there is the following inscription all around:

My spring rushes over time,
I saw the city in happiness and hardship,
what the people prepare for themselves,
they reap - storm or bread.

The costs for this redesign amounted to DM 5,154.46  , which was borne by the council of the Cottbus district .

In the course of the marketplace redesign in 2007, the fountain was extensively renovated. It was completely blasted and cleaned. He got a new water cycle system. The foundation was partially renewed and damage to the roof was repaired. The inside of the memorial got a new seal. In addition, the fence was galvanized , sandblasted and powder coated .
