Dorothea von Philipsborn

Dorothea Luise Mathilde Auguste von Philipsborn (born May 20, 1894 in Strehlitz near Schweidnitz, Silesia , † August 31, 1971 in Weißwasser ) was a German sculptor and painter. In Lausitz she is one of the most important artists of the 20th century who shaped public space. Von Philipsborn created numerous sacred works of art and small sculptures made of plaster of paris, bronze, tin and wood. She herself described her art as "figurative realism" .

Life

Dorothea von Philipsborn first studied at the Academy of Arts in Breslau with Paul Schulz , then at the Dresden Art Academy with Peter Pöppelmann . After her flight from Gut Strehlitz in Silesia in 1946 , she came to Trebendorf . In 1951 she set up a studio in the former porcelain factory in Weißwasser and lived in Weißwasser from 1953 until her death. Von Philipsborn was of noble descent and never denied her Christian and Silesian origins in the GDR. She was a member of the Association of Visual Artists founded in 1950 .
