Dennis Miller painting bunker in Calcot

Dennis Miller Bunker (* 6. November 1861 in New York , NY ; † 28. December 1890 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American painter of Impressionism .

At the age of 17, Bunker became a pupil of William Merritt Chase in 1878 . With his recommendation, he moved to Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio in Paris for almost four years in 1881 .

In the fall of 1885, Bunker returned to the United States and settled in Boston, Mass. low. In the same year he was appointed lecturer for painting at the “Cowles School of arts”. He taught there until 1890 and influenced a lot of students with his impressionistic style. One of the most important is Isabella Stewart Gardener , whose “Feway Court” palace and art collection continued to be run as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum after her death in 1924 . But painters like William McGregor Paxton also owe a lot to Bunker.

Bunker only interrupted his teaching at the Cowles School of arts in the summer of 1888, when he was painting plein air landscapes with John Singer Sargent in Calcott, Salop (GB) . From this time on, Bunker's style of painting became more and more relaxed, although the influence of his teacher Gérôme with his strict accuracy can still be seen.

The first American impressionist, Dennis Miller Bunker, died at the age of 29 on December 28, 1890 in Boston, Massachusetts of untreated flu.
