Dennis Saikkonen (born November 27, 1992 in Bern ) is a Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper with a Swedish and Finnish passport , who was most recently under contract with EHC Biel in the National League A (NLA).
Career
Saikkonen spent most of his youth at SC Bern , but was also in action in the youth department of SC Lyss during the 2008/09 season . After him, the Brampton Battalion of the Canadian junior league Ontario Hockey League in the CHL Import Draft in 2010 were selected in the second round to a total of 83 position, he graduated in the 2010/11 season a total of 13 OHL games for the team.
Subsequently, Saikkonen returned to the youth department of SC Bern and received further match practice in the U20 selection of the city of Bern in the Elite A Juniors. During the 2011/12 season Saikkonen was at the HC Sierre from the National League B awarded. Saikkonen made his debut for the Valais in the second highest Swiss league and played a total of 11 games for the club before returning to the U20 juniors of SC Bern.
In April 2012 he received a one-year contract with the GCK Lions , who loaned him to HC Thurgau for four games in January 2013 . In addition, Saikkonen was also eligible to play for the ZSC Lions , but was not used.
During the 2013/14 season Saikkonen played for JYP-Akatemia in the second highest league in Finland and thanks to excellent performances (94.3% catch quota, 1.81 GAA) he was brought back during the play-offs from Liiga club JYP Jyväskylä . On March 31, 2014 Saikkonen made his debut as a 21-year-old in the top division of Finland against SaiPa . In May 2014 he extended his contract for one year, but continued to work at JYP-Akatemia. At the end of December 2014 he temporarily returned to Switzerland on loan and strengthened HC Ambrì-Piotta before returning to Finland.
In April 2016 he signed a contract with Friborg-Gottéron from the National League A (NLA) and switched to EHC Kloten for the 2017/18 season .
In the 2018/19 season he was initially without a club, then received a short-term contract with Iisalmen Peli-Karhut (IPK) from Mestis in December 2018 and was signed in January 2019 as a replacement for the injured Elien Paupe from EHC Biel .
International
At the international level, Saikkonen represented the Swiss U16, U17, U18 and U20 junior teams several times. For the U18 Junior World Championship in 2010 he was appointed to the Swiss national team and, together with Lukas Meili, formed the goalkeeping duo of the Confederates during the tournament, in which Saikkonen played two matches .
