Denys Haynes
Denys Haynes (born February 15, 1913 in Harrogate , Yorkshire , † September 27, 1994 in Oxford ) was a British classical archaeologist .
After attending Marlborough College from 1926 to 1932, Haynes studied Classical Archeology in Cambridge at Trinity College until 1935 . He then studied Provincial Roman Archeology at the University of Bonn and conducted research at the British School at Rome . In 1937 he began his academic career as an assistant in the metalwork department of the Victoria and Albert Museum . From 1939 he worked in the antiques department of the British Museum . He was one of the museum employees who stored the objects due to the war. In 1941 he joined the Royal Artillery , later he worked for the military secret service. From 1945 to 1946 he worked as an "Antiquities officer" in Libya . In 1946 he returned to the British Museum. In 1951 he married the German Etruscanologist Sybille Overhoff . In 1954 he became deputy head of the antiquities department, in 1956 head of the antiquities department of the British Museum (“ Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities ”) as successor to Bernard Ashmole . In 1976 he retired.
