Denys Lionel Page

Sir Denys Lionel Page FBA (born May 11, 1908 in Reading , † July 6, 1978 in Tarset in Northumberland ) was a British Greek poet and papyrologist .

Life

Denys L. Page, the son of a railroad engineer, attended Newbury Grammar School and then studied Classical Philology at Christ Church in Oxford (with Gilbert Murray and John Dewar Denniston ). During his studies, he won numerous awards and grants, including the Gaisford Prize for Greek poetry. In 1930 he received the First in Litterae Humaniores . After a year as a Derby Scholar at the University of Vienna , where he deepened his studies with Ludwig Radermacher , he was employed as a lecturer at Christ Church, the following year as a student and tutor, and in 1937 as a junior censor.

In 1950, Page was appointed Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge University and employed by Trinity College . From 1959 to 1973 he was also a Masters at Jesus College . In 1974 Page retired. The British Academy belonged to Page since 1,952th In 1969 he received the Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies , and from 1971 to 1974 he served as President of the Academy. In recognition of his services, he was knighted in 1971. In 1972 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In his research, Page dealt with wide areas of Greek literature. His focus was on archaic and classical Greek poetry, especially poetry , tragedy , epic poems , epigrams and iambs. He published critical editions of various poets. The Poetarum Lesbiorum Fragmenta are cited by his name and that of his colleague Edgar Lobel .
