John Dewar Denniston

John Dewar Denniston (born March 4, 1887 in Bareilly , British India , † May 2, 1949 in Church Stretton , South Shropshire ) was a British classical scholar .

Denniston earned an MA and a D. Litt. in Oxford . In 1913 he found a job as a tutorial fellow at Hertford College , which he held until his death. He was also a tutor in Greek at Christ Church , Oxford. For five years he edited the classical scholarly journal The Classical Quarterly . He was a fellow of the British Academy and carried the OBE ( Order of the British Empire ).
