Deodorant is a form of deodorant . Like all other deodorants (spray, powder, roll-on deodorant), it counteracts an unpleasant odor in the armpits . Due to its solid shape, this form of deodorant does not require a spray can made of aluminum with a propellant gas or a more complex plastic packaging like the deodorant roller. Many deodorant creams are considered natural cosmetics , are marketed as particularly natural and also dispense with certain ingredients such as palm oil , silicones or paraffins and thus follow a trend that prevails among young women with high purchasing power, which is also reflected in corresponding reports from magazines such as Cosmopolitan , Harper's Bazaar or Bunte shows.

Manufacturing

An effective deodorant, like other forms, is easy to make yourself from basic materials available to everyone and is therefore propagated as a sustainable alternative to conventional products from the drugstore range for consumers who want to avoid certain ingredients or act particularly ecologically.

Due to the simple production and the - due to the rejection of deodorants with aluminum salts by many consumers - demand for alternatives to conventional deodorants, deodorant cream was initially part of the range of various natural cosmetics startups. Established cosmetic brands picked up the trend.

ingredients

The main components of a deodorant cream are starch z. B. Potato starch (Solanum tuberosum starch) and sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium bicarbonate, baking soda ) . In cosmetic products, potato starch is used as a binding agent , swelling agent and viscosity regulator. Sodium hydrogen carbonate probably prevents the development of a sweat odor by chemically binding the odor-causing substances and by lowering the pH value. Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera oil) or other vegetable oils care for the skin. Talk ( Talc ) has an absorbing and takes odor-causing substances.

Aluminum salts

Deodorants containing aluminum have come under fire in particular since a risk assessment by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in 2019. The BfR's assessment was criticized for their part. In July 2020, the BfR relativized its assessment based on new studies and considers a health risk from antiperspirants, which contain aluminum salts, to be unlikely.

application

Deodorant cream has a firm, pasty consistency. It is applied to the skin of the armpits in the dosage recommended by the manufacturer.
