Depilation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term depilation refers to several hair removal procedures in which only the visible part of the hair outside the skin is removed. The most common method of depilation is shaving . The use of chemical agents, such as depilatory creams, is also widespread . With both methods, the hair grows back within a short time. In contrast to depilation, with epilation the hair and the hair roots are removed, either temporarily or permanently. Depilations were already carried out in ancient times.

Any hairy skin can be depilated. Shaving the hair of the head is common, for example, with Buddhist monks , with Christian monks as a partial shave in the form of tonsure and with skinheads as an expression of belonging to the group.

Shaving body hair , especially armpit hair and leg hair , is particularly widespread among women. The intimate shave , traditionally also popular with women in some cultures, is currently beginning to find more and more followers in the West. The arm shave is comparatively rare, mostly only in connection with the whole body hair removal .

Methods

When shaving, the hair is cut off with a very sharp blade ( razor blade ) directly at its exit point from the skin. The corresponding procedures are wet shaving with shaving foam or gel and dry shaving with an electric razor .

Chemical depilatories in the form of cream, lotion or foam are also used. The alkaline active ingredients contained in it (approx. PH 12) break down the peptide bonds and disulfide bridges of the hair keratin . The part of the hair that is outside the skin falls apart and is separated. The hair root is not affected and new hair grows back immediately. Salts of thioglycolic acid and thiolactic acid are used as active ingredients . The use of these substances is regulated by the EC Cosmetics Directive with regard to the amount used and the pH value of the formulations . Thorough washing with water is required after using the preparations. Post-treatment preparations set to acidic (approx. PH 4) help with neutralization.

Compared to epilation

Compared to epilation, depilation has the disadvantage that the hair grows back very quickly and has to be depilated again. Depilation with a razor or depilatory cream is very easy to do and painless, for example in the shower or bathtub .
