Depot Island is a small island of granite boulders off the Scott coast of East Antarctica, Victoria Land . It is located about 3 km northwest of Cape Ross .
The northern group of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton led the Nimrod expedition (1907-1909) discovered them. The island got its name in memory of the fact that the northern group deposited rock samples here on the way to the Antarctic magnetic pole .
