The amphibian man (OT: Russian Человек-амфибия Tschelowek-Amfibija ) is a Soviet feature film from 1962. It is based on the novel of the same name by Alexander Beljajew .

action

In the sea off the coast of an unspecified southern country, an enigmatic creature terrifies the fishermen. The unknown being has human form, but has fish scales and goggle eyes. Only one person knows the secret of the sea devil: the brilliant scientist Doctor Salvator, who quietly carries out his experiments in his laboratory. The "monkfish" is his son Ichthyander. The professor implanted gills for him as a child because he suffered from an incurable lung disease. Ichthyander can live on land and in the ocean. Growing up in isolation, Ichthyander has grown into a man and falls in love with the fisher girl Guttiere. But a brutal businessman wants to catch the monkfish and make it work for him as a pearl diver. He does this with the help of fishermen who catch him with a net. He had not made himself popular with them when he often freed his “friends of the sea” from their nets underwater by slitting the nets with his knife.

Since Ichthyander was captured, his tormentor has kept him in a small container of water that is covered with a grid so that the amphibian has to stay under water at all times. This means that there is a risk that his lungs, which he still has, will regress and lose their function. When he finally manages to escape, he can only live in the water and cannot return to land.
