The lawyer is based on true cases legal drama of the ZDF , which aired 1976-1978 in three seasons to 13 episodes each. The title role of the committed lawyer was played by Heinz Bennent in the first season and Wolfgang Kieling in the second and third seasons .

In the first thirteen episodes, lawyer Dr. Wetzlar with his colleague Fräulein Lattmann, who from the second season of Dr. Colmar and Miss Jeske will be replaced. They deal with the problems of their clients, which often involve civil disputes. Various little things such as confiscated driver's licenses, unpaid bills and occasionally active investigative work are on the agenda. In more severe cases, they try to prove the innocence of a client who is already in prison. At the end of each episode there is a court hearing.
The episodes began and ended with a narrator and the introduction: "In the name of the people ..." At the end there was an explanation of how the cases continued for the respective people and what sentence they had to accept from time to time.
