The elephant - songs in our language and in your language is an album by the children's songwriter Fredrik Vahle , which was first published by Plans in 1981 . In addition to Vahle, Meggi Sachs and a singing group consisting of German and Turkish children, the Salzboden children's group, can be heard on the album . A number of the arrangements come from Erich Schmeckenbecher , a member of the Zupfgeigenhansel at the time .

Emergence

At the end of the 1970s, Vahle played in a Mannheim children's bookstore. He observed that the attention span of the Turkish children present was smaller than that of the German ones, as the children of the guest workers understood less of the song lyrics than their German peers: “They became restless and loud. That bothered the German children (...) ”. In this situation, Vahle wanted "songs (...) that also include the Turkish children and that contribute to understanding between the children." With a Turkish friend, the songwriter translated songs from Turkey over the next year and a half and wrote his own Material and also included the languages of other countries from which guest workers were recruited. Children of Turkish origin joined his Salzbödender children's group, and they finally recorded the titles for the record together with German children.

Musicologist and specialist book author on the subject of children's songs Thomas Freitag calls the 1999 album one of the “standard-setting productions” within the “children's music scene” of the 70s and 80s.
