Sculpture of the port workers in Frankfurt am Main

The dock worker is a bronze sculpture created by Constantin Meunier in 1890 . The sculpture stands at the southern bridgehead of the Friedensbrücke in Frankfurt am Main and reminds us that immediately downstream of the bridge on its northern side is the former Frankfurt Westhafen , which was in operation from 1885 to 1999. The sculpture has been in its current location since 1910. From 1950 to 1955 it was temporarily installed in front of the Städel due to construction work on the bridge .

The figure is somewhat larger than life and represents a porter in work clothes. To protect the neck from coal dust and from chafing when carrying sacks made of jute fabric , he wears a kind of hood as neck protection . The sculpture is a foundation of the entrepreneur and then director of the Cassella works , Leo Gans . In 1899 he made 150,000 gold marks available for the dock worker and a second Meunier bronze sculpture in Frankfurt, The Sower , set up in Günthersburg Park .

Similar sculptures can be found in Antwerp , Stockholm , Dresden , Copenhagen and Lima .
