The Westhafen in Frankfurt am Main is a former inland port on the right bank of the Main . It consists of a 560 meter long and 75 meter wide harbor basin , which is separated from the Main by a pier .
location
The port is located in the west of Frankfurt city center in the Gutleutviertel , directly between the Friedensbrücke and the Main-Neckar-Brücke , a few blocks south of the main train station and the administrative center .
history
The Westhafen was opened on October 16, 1886 after three years of construction. At this point, west of the old town , was the winter harbor , where ships were protected from ice during the cold season .
In 1993 the city council passed the resolution to develop the port area with a total area of twelve hectares into a modern urban quarter with apartments for around 2,000 people as well as offices, shops and restaurants and a total of around 3,000 jobs. The port basin was to be preserved, bridged with two jetties and used as a marina .
Present shape
The harbor mole (Karpfenweg) is now built up to the river crab footbridge with twelve individual seven-story houses. Some of them stand on stakes in the water and have their own jetties .
The Westhafen Tower , a glazed office high-rise on a circular floor plan , has stood at the eastern entrance since 2003 . It was one of the first buildings to be completed on the former Westhafen. At 109 meters, the Westhafen Tower is one of the smaller Frankfurt skyscrapers . Because of its diamond-shaped facade , the people of Frankfurt also refer to it as the largest Ebbelweig glass in the world or " Geripptes ".
On the western side of the shore section, just before the Main-Neckar Bridge , created by 2004 further office buildings (Gatehouse, Western harbor pier , etc.) prior to the west power plant of Mainova at the Gutleutstraße. The listed pressurized water works , the last historical building of the former port facilities, is also located here. It is part of the Route of Industrial Culture Rhein-Main .
