The Westhafen Tower - "the ribbed"

The Westhafen Tower is a high-rise in the Gutleut district of Frankfurt am Main . The 112.3 meter high building was designed by the Schneider + Schumacher architects and completed in 2004.

The Westhafen Tower is one of the first buildings on the former Westhafen in Frankfurt . In addition to office buildings, apartments have been built around the port basin since 2000.

Building construction

The skyscraper has the shape of a cylinder with a diameter of 37.5 meters. As the floors are arranged as squares, 18 winter gardens were created between the inner and outer facade. Each of the 30 above-ground floors has a rental area of around 820 square meters.

The architectural feature is the diamond-like facade structure. 3,556 triangular panes of glass form the outer skin. The structure of the glazing, reminiscent of a Frankfurt apple wine glass , gave the skyscraper the popular name Geripptes .

Part of the triangular segments of the glass facade can be opened automatically at the lower corner for ventilation purposes. The floors are heated with convectors embedded under the windows, while cooling takes place via a cooling ceiling.

Use and reception

The Westhafen Tower is home to the European Supervisory Authority for Insurance and Company Pension Plans (EIOPA).

In the opening credits of the ProSieben news program “Newstime”, the Westhafen Tower can be seen in the middle of a computer-animated high-rise landscape consisting of Frankfurt skyscrapers. A computer-animated station logo on the outer facade is intended to suggest that the news studio is located in the high-rise. The opening picture, taken from the perspective of the top of the Main Tower , shows the Westhafen Tower on a significantly enlarged scale at the Taunusanlage between Trianon and the twin towers of Deutsche Bank .

The color scheme (petrol) and pattern of the Westhafen Tower inspired the design of the third jersey used by Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2013/14 season , the so-called "Geripptes" jersey.
