The Hobbit is an action adventure from the computer game manufacturer Sierra Entertainment and Vivendi Universal Games , which was released in 2003 for Game Boy Advance (GBA), GameCube , PlayStation 2 , Xbox and as a game for Windows PC . The plot is based on the novel The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien . The license to develop the game was granted to Sierra by Tolkien Enterprises . It was developed by “Inevitable Entertainment” (GameCube, PS2, Xbox) “The Fizz Factor” (PC) and “Saffire” (GBA).

Action and control

The action adventure is based on the novel. As Bilbo Baggins , the player sets out from Hobbiton in a third-person perspective on his adventurous journey to the Lonely Mountain , on which he was sent by Gandalf with Thorin and his dwarves. Among other things, he has to sneak up on the three trolls without being discovered, meets Gollum and finds the magic ring , has to defend himself against the spiders in the dark forest and finally survive against the dragon Smaug . The player can collect objects or defend himself against his enemies with different weapons. With the power of the ring he can make himself invisible. It is controlled on the PC using the keyboard and mouse. Bilbo can collect or move objects and thereby gain additional experience. Various weapons are available to him, such as a walking stick, stones for throwing at enemies or the sword stab. He can also collect and use healing potions as well as jump, crouch or sneak up on them. The camera perspective can also be changed up or down. The German version of Bilbo is spoken by Bastian Pastewka .

graphic

The graphics are more reminiscent of a cartoon or picture book and are not based on the characters from the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings . The levels are varied, with additional special effects being largely dispensed with. Sometimes smaller film-like cutscenes are played. The cartoon style is well adapted to the mix of adventure RPG, puzzle and platformer .
