On the fifth anniversary of their relationship, Melissa Barrett separates from her partner Carter because, among other things, he disappoints her with an alleged marriage proposal and, according to his own statement, is bored. A week later, she is looking at photos with her best friend Leslie. Then Leslie takes her to the gym. There the attractive trainer Trey persuades Melissa to give a free lesson. She then becomes a member with Trey as a personal trainer. While working in her own art gallery, she meets Adam Diaz, who shows interest in the paintings on display. At the gym, she and Trey set a goal of muscle-up within six weeks, and after the first few exercises, the trainer gives her a fitness tracker . However, he secretly sets up your smartphone so that he can spy on all of your data remotely.

When Melissa refuses to talk about Carter, Trey tells her that he was dumped by a girl in high school. Melissa then reveals that Carter wanted to take her to the Alps, even though she is afraid of heights. Then Trey lets them practice on the climbing wall. He secretly releases the safety rope, which the arriving Leslie observes in disbelief. Melissa, on the other hand, is proud that she has overcome her fear.

Adam reappears in the gallery and arranges a date with Melissa. The next day she has to bring Leslie to work and comes a little late for training, where Trey gives her a key to the studio. On the date, Adam and Melissa talk about how they've been disappointed by their previous partners. Trey watches the couple on their way home and speaks to Melissa about it at the next training session. In the evening Adam cooks for her and tells her how he started collecting works of art with his late father's money. Eventually he has sex with Melissa, which the jealous Trey notices from the pulse measurement.

The next morning, Trey lurks in front of Melissa's front door and a confrontation breaks out between the two men. In the gym, the trainer reacts angrily and puts Melissa under so much pressure that she falls unconscious from the treadmill. Later, Leslie talks by the pool about Melissa's former suitor, who slipped her paper heart under the door, but she can't remember the man. Leslie is also skeptical about Trey and the training.

During the next training session, Trey manipulates a message to Adam on Melissa's cell phone and blocks contact. He also talks badly to Leslie. The following morning Adam comes to the studio early because he thinks Melissa is there. Trey asks him to bench press. He takes the opportunity to block Melissa's number on Adam's cell phone. Trey then tries to get closer to his student physically with a self-defense exercise. But Melissa is concerned because she has not heard from Adam. During the night her cell phone rings several times with unknown calls.

After the weekend, she announces to Trey that she wants to take a break from training and prevails against his aggressive resistance. In the evening, a shock awaits them in the gallery, which was devastated by a break-in. The next day, Carter suddenly appears in her apartment. He tells her that Adam wrote him nasty text messages. Leslie then uses her computer science knowledge to call up Carter's received messages on her laptop. The messages consist of the often repeated words "My Melissa" and come from Melissa's number. Leslie also notices that Melissa's number is blocked on Adam and draws suspicion on Trey.

Since Melissa has to clean up the gallery to prepare for the finissage that evening , Leslie drives to the gym to do some research. In Trey's desk she finds his before-and-after photo album and sees a photo that Trey used to be fat. At that moment, the trainer grabs her from behind. Since Melissa cannot reach her friend by phone, she carries out a backdoor IP attack on the laptop according to her instructions . In the process, she finds out that the data from her fitness tracker is shared with Trey. When she takes off the bracelet, Trey finds in despair that he has lost the connection. However, he sees Melissa's appointment with Adam at 10:00 p.m. in the gallery and knocks down the competitor there.

At the gym, Melissa frees Leslie from a locker and manages to make an 911 call before Trey shows up. Then she sees Adam who is tied to the ropes of the boxing ring. Trey reveals to Melissa that he's the former college suitor. Melissa frees herself and climbs the bar with a muscle-up. From there she jumps Trey in the back. She frees Adam and knocks Trey down with a dumbbell before the police arrive. The coach is sentenced to five years in prison and sends Melissa paper hearts out of prison.
