The Salmon zu Danzig was a spirits distillery and liqueur factory in Danzig , which for centuries has produced and sold internationally known and legendary liqueurs that have also been mentioned many times in fiction literature, including Danziger Goldwasser .

history

The company was founded by the Mennonite Dutchman Ambrosius Vermöllen from De Lier (in the province of South Holland ), who received citizenship in Danzig on July 6, 1598 . Here he founded a liqueur factory whose business was based on traditional recipes he had brought with him. In 1704 the factory was relocated to Danziger Breitgasse. At that time it was common for houses to be marked with pictures of animals as house brands instead of house numbers . The house in Breitgasse has had a sign with a salmon on its facade since time immemorial, which is why it was called "Lachshaus" or simply "The Salmon". The symbol was adopted in the sandstone ornamentation of the baroque facade.

The company was run by the Henrichsdorff family in Danzig in the 19th century and then passed to Maria Anna Henrichsdorff and her husband Adalbert von der Marwitz auf Klein Nossin , and then to their seven children. The most famous products of the factory were the herbal liqueur Danziger Goldwasser and the juniper liqueur Krambambuli .

The company had already opened a branch in Berlin in 1922, which supplied western Germany and abroad. This allowed the recipes and the company name (company) to continue to be used legally in Germany after the Second World War. In 1971 the majority of the company was taken over by the Gräflich von Hardenberg'schen Kornbrennerei , while the 30 Marwitz descendants today still hold 20% of the trademark rights. Today the “Liqueur Factory Der Lachs” together with the “Gräflich von Hardenberg'schen Kornbrennerei” and the “Wilthener Weinbrennerei” are one of the three main brands of the Hardenberg-Wilthen distillery in Nörten-Hardenberg . Danziger Goldwasser is an important product of the company.

The house in Gdansk was rebuilt after the Second World War. A renowned restaurant called “Pod Łososiem” (German: “To the salmon”) is located here at “ulica Szeroka nr 52-54”.

Literary mentions

In Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm a product of the house appears in the 1st act, 2nd scene (the landlord with Just):

Just: ... I have to say: good, very good! - Do it yourself, host? -
Host: Guard! veritable Danziger! real, double salmon!
...
Landlord: ... One more thing, Mr. Just; All good things come in threes!
Just:… good thing, really good thing! ....
