The Long Man is a menhir near Bad Kreuznach in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Location and description

The Lange Mann is located south of Bad Kreuznach in a wooded area directly on a forest path. It used to serve as a boundary stone between the places Bad Kreuznach, Frei-Laubersheim and Altenbamberg and thus temporarily also as a boundary stone between Prussia , the Bavarian Rhine District and the Grand Duchy of Hesse . The Hallstatt burial mound field of Altenbamberg lies 600 m to the east . According to Otto Gödel , the stone could be related to this, perhaps even come from here, and was only converted into a boundary stone in the Middle Ages .

The menhir is made of sandstone and has a heavily weathered surface. It has a height of 76 cm, a width of 55 cm and a depth of 28 cm. The stone is cuboid. It has an incised cross, several grooves and graffiti. In the 20th century Otto Gödel was still able to see the frame of a Bad Kreuznach coat of arms, which has since disappeared.
