The Man by the Sea ( Danish Mennesket ved Havet ) is a nine-meter-high group of sculptures made of white concrete, created by the sculptor , painter and graphic artist Svend Wiig Hansen .

The sculpture is in Sædding Strand, north-west of Esbjerg city ​​center, near the Fisheries and Maritime Museum . The sculpture was commissioned in 1994; The occasion was Esbjerg's 100th anniversary as an independent rural community ( so-called commune ). It was opened to the public on October 28, 1995. It is now a landmark of the city and can be seen ten kilometers away from the sea in good weather.

The size and posture of the group of sculptures is based on that of Ramses in the temple of Abu Simbel . The moais also served as inspiration.

In the original design by Svend Wiig Hansen from 1954, the sculpture was to be placed on the headland of Grenen near Skagen .
