The morning. Wiener Montagblatt
The morning with the subtitle Wiener Montagblatt , from August 1919 to August 1920 on Monday , was a newspaper in Vienna that appeared weekly on Mondays between 1910 and 1938.
history
In December 1909, Maximilian Schreier and Carl Colbert founded the Wiener Zeitungsgesellschaft mbH, the main purpose of which was to publish the newspaper Der Morgen. Wiener Montagblatt was. From 1917 Schreier was the sole managing director, he was also the editor from the beginning.
The editors-in-chief were Karl Reinberger, Karl Blaschek, Rudolf Blaschek (February 21, 1910 to May 26, 1919), Hugo Bettauer (May 2, 1922 to April 17, 1925), Rudolf Kalmar (July 20 to October 5, 1925) and Schreier himself (June 2, 1919 to April 24, 1922; March 30, 1925 to July 13, 1925; October 12, 1925 to 1938). The last issue was published on March 7, 1938, shortly before the “ Anschluss ”.
The editorial office was initially located at Wipplingerstraße 24-26 and at Mariannengasse 17, from June 1910 on Pelikangasse 4 and from April 1913 on Canisiusgasse 8-10.
The newspaper was initially printed by Karl Brakl, Schottenfeldgasse 41–43, Wilhelm Fischer, Vienna IX., Then by Johann N. Vernay, Vienna IX. Mariannengasse 17, later Canisiusgasse 8-10.
After the " Anschluss of Austria ", several employees and the editor-in-chief Schreier were deported because of their anti-Nazi attitudes and their Jewish origins . In the exhibition “ The Eternal Jew ” in Vienna's Nordwestbahnhalle , many of those involved in the newspaper were mocked and “described” in the diction of the time.
Orientation and content
The direction of the newspaper was progressive and liberal and stood up for German-free election candidates, fought Christian socialists and the clergy and turned against attacks on Freemasonry . In the humorous supplement, Der Blaue Montag , humoresques, jokes, satires and political caricatures appeared.
After the end of the First World War, the paper advertised the connection to Germany and denounced the imperialism of the Entente . In the First Republic , the editorial board dealt more with political issues and polemicized against Seipel . In addition, new sections were subsequently introduced - sometimes only for a short time: The morning call, A democratic election sheet, and The woman as a voter , election sheet of the German-Austrian Association for Women's Suffrage (1919); Sports paper of “Morgen” (from May 1922), Auto-Morgen (from February 1923), The Morning in Pictures (1925), Mode-Morgen , Praktische Hausfrau and film pages.
A balance was found with Dollfuss , and from 1933 the editorial team vehemently opposed National Socialism .
