The Record Watcher is a 2012 film drama directed by Karola Hattop .

action

Marvin Feldmann works for the editorial team of the “Book of Records” as a record observer. The request comes from the island of Föglö in Finland for a new record attempt in stone hopping , which he is supposed to observe. The pedantic and water-shy Feldmann reluctantly takes the trip from Germany to Finland and finds accommodation in Fanny Hilleröd's guesthouse. Fanny is the aunt of twelve year old Elias, who wants to break the record. The boy has an aneurysm that could cause his death at any time. Elias wants a flat stone to jump 52 times on the water - once more than the previous world record. With only 50 jumps, however, he barely missed the record.

When Feldmann is about to leave the next morning, he discovers that the only ferry that only runs once a day is supposedly broken. His cell phone has suddenly disappeared too, and nobody wants to let him use the phone. Since he had promised that Elias would have time "until the next ferry leaves" for the attempt, he lets him try again against the rules, which again fails. His attempt to leave fails because of the broken ferry. In the evening, Feldmann thaws a little while talking to Fanny, drinks too much and misses the ferry a third time. So Elias gets his chance again and fails again. Feldmann also missed the ferry on the next few days, this time on purpose, and spends the time on the island with Fanny and Elias, the pedant, who has not been able to endure anywhere for long, begins to enjoy life. He promises Elias one last attempt, but this is foiled by his editor, who finally wants to pick him up. On the way back, he sees a rescue helicopter flying to the island, fears for the boy's life and has the boat turned. He rushes to Elias' hospital and encourages him.

Feldmann organizes a public appeal through his editorial team to send Elias postcards with wishes for recovery, which then arrive from all over the world. With over a million postcards, Elias has the record of "receiving the most postcards".

Others

The actions of Marvin and his thoughts are repeatedly deepened by short self-talk that can only be heard by the viewer.

"A sympathetic (television) comedy that once again celebrates Finland as the home of bizarre, warm humor."
