The Snowman (alternative title The Snowman - The Summer of My Life ) is a German cartoon from 1944. The author of the book was Horst von Möllendorff , the animations are by Hans Fischerkoesen . The shooting location was Potsdam , near the UFA Neubabelsberg Studios.

action

The snowman is standing in a village square while falling snowflakes draw a heart on his chest and bring him to life. He begins to play with the snow until a dog takes notice of him and presses him. After the snowman chases him away, he repairs his wounds with snow. He then begins to skate but collapses and begins to melt, whereupon he rolls down a hill and regains his shape.

Tired, the snowman falls asleep while a rabbit tries to steal his carrot nose, which he notices. Then he enters a house, finds his likeness on the January calendar sheet and a summer picture with flowering plants, which fascinates him and arouses the desire to experience July. The snowman puts himself in a freezer to bridge the gap until summer. While he sleeps, the sun melts the snow outside and the vegetation awakens.

Arrived in summer, the snowman wakes up and sees exactly the representation of the calendar sheet with the flowering plants through a window. It drifts in the grain, dances through the rural area and annoys a chicken and a cow with its cold snow. Then he melts under the summer heat while he begins to sing: “This is the summer of my life, how beautiful you are in your flower dress. Whoever saw you does not live in vain, my heart melts with sheer bliss .... How beautiful you are .... “The rabbit, who tried to steal his nose in winter, appears with his four children. While they are laughing, it seems sad and takes the carrot nose while looking at the sky.

background

The Snowman is the most famous German animated film from the time of the Second World War. Fischerkosen's work captivates with the perspective tracking shots at the beginning of the film, when the snowman is driven down within a location, and in the second part, when the ladybug is skiing on the snowman rolling with joy. The protagonist's personality is quite ambivalent, because while on the one hand he longs for the beauty of summer and is ready to die for the moment, on the other hand he is a rogue and teases both the cow and the chicken with his ice cream.
