The Way of Death is a German silent film melodrama from 1916 with Maria Carmi in the leading role.
action
The count and his wife Marie live a happy marriage until suddenly a stranger intrudes into their lives. To get rid of him, they both decide to leave the country and settle in an old castle equipped with several dungeons. One day the stranger turns up there too. He invites himself to a party and urges Marie to go on a nightly rendezvous.
Only now does she recognize the man. It's Rolf, a former lover from the time when Marie was still working as a street whore. Rolf presses her because he really wants her back. To get rid of him once and for all, the woman pretends to accept his wishes, lures him to the castle and imprisons the annoying ex-lover in one of the dungeons. Driven by a bad conscience, Marie then confesses her dubious past to her husband. Finally she releases Rolf, inhales toxic fumes and dies on the castle stairs.

criticism
“As is the case with all films in this series, its highly dramatic plot makes it suitable for putting the art of the famous" Carmi "in the right light. (...) The entire presentation of the film, which uses the most modern technical means and amazes us with the splendor of the recordings, is as perfect as the artist's game. "
