action

The daydreamer David, who devoted his life entirely to reading books, tries to keep himself and his beloved wife afloat financially with the activity of a peddler, which often lets him move from village to village. Although David showered her with jewelry and clothes, one day she turned to old Count Stanislaus, who promised her a full life. One day when David returns home with acquired gems, the house is empty and Esther has left. The peddler learns from the neighbors that the infidelity has moved to the count's castle.

David immediately rushes to the castle and wants to confront Stanislaus. The count intends to chase the intruder from the yard with his riding crop, and at the same moment Esther turns her back on her husband. David trudges and resolves to break with his previous life. He moves to the next town and takes a job in a bank there. With a lot of hard work and an iron will, he can soon climb the career ladder. Now David is also socially recognized and one day meets his adulterous wife and count at a meeting. His wife no longer recognizes the outwardly changed David, and so the former peddler decides in his own way to take revenge on the count for his shameful actions. He knows of the Count's passion for gambling and therefore wants to ruin the nobles by gambling.

And this is how it happens: David takes all the money from Stanislaus and eventually even his lock. But all of this is not enough revenge for David. Esther is supposed to find out who has driven her lover into ruin and invites those who have been chased from house and yard to the castle that now belongs to him. Esther, who still does not recognize who is standing in front of her, is led by David to both of their former homes; only then does the penny drop with her. Esther asks forgiveness for her outrage, but David remains tough as iron. He rejects her and bursts into tears after she leaves.

criticism

“The serious, poignant act ... is particularly captivating through the masterful characterization of the individual figures. (...) With a truly shocking effect, Bassermann personifies the pious, dreamy trade Jew who, through his calculating efficiency and iron will, makes it to the lord of the castle after he has ruined the count's seducer of his wife. The biblical words' eye for eye ', tooth for tooth' are his guiding star. The plot, scenery and play are all at the very highest level and this film should exert great attraction on the audience. "
