The Disposed Father is a documentary film by Douglas Wolfsperger from 2008 . The first performance took place in autumn 2008 at the Hof International Film Festival , theatrical release was on June 11 of 2009.
action
Douglas Wolfsperger has not seen his daughter for three years. He makes his way to her, knowing that this could be the last meeting because a court has ruled against him.
On his journey he meets fathers who are similar. Your exes make contact with their child difficult or impossible. Using five examples, personal experiences, feelings and experiences of “disposed of fathers” are conveyed subjectively.
background
The film addresses the issue of the legal status of fathers in Germany, especially child abduction by mothers, as custody is almost always granted to the mother.
As a directly affected father, Douglas Wolfsperger made a personal, subjective film. As a director , producer and person concerned, he visited some of the cinemas in which the film was shown and then entered the discussion.
criticism
“ The Disposed Father is a very subjective film. Because he takes up the director's personal experiences, because he appears in front of the camera himself - but also because the protagonists' point of view remains unchallenged. The viewer does not find out how the stories are presented from the perspective of the ex-partners. In return, he gets deep insights into the desperation of 'disposed of' fathers. This subjectivity can be held against Wolfsperger. On the other hand, The Disposed Father is a quiet, calm film - and an urgent reminder to parents to be aware of their responsibility for one another and for their children - even when they separate. "
"Subjective plea for legally disadvantaged parents, especially fathers, for whom, with all due consideration of the well-being of the children, improvement would be needed."
“The fact that the… transparent implicit distribution of roles has not changed in the 21st century and in an enlightened society like ours, despite a number of legal initiatives, is the explosive power of this film, which shows personal fates as well as one of the few remaining taboos.
Douglas Wolfsperger's film The Disposable Father , precisely because of its merciless and never veiled subjectivity, could become an important impetus to deal with this taboo more closely and to take measures that finally aim to ensure regular contact for separated parents - regardless of gender with their own children. It would be - even if some courts negate precisely this - a step that is long overdue, especially for the further development of the children. "
Legal dispute
The mother of Wolfsperger's daughter obtained an injunction against the use of a photo of her daughter in the film . As a result, various cinemas have removed the documentary from their programs. Wolfsperger applied for the injunction to be reversed.
