action

Lars Hansen, born in 1971 and single, is looking for a job. After several rejections, he goes to the employment agency. There he meets a former schoolmate, Ida. She gives him her phone number. Due to a mix-up at the job center, Lars is sent to a Danish course instead of the Pakistani El Hassan. He tries to clarify the mix-up, but does not succeed in spite of a long phone call with different people. Angry, he ultimately insults the receptionist as a Jutland peasant trampoline who is supposed to care where he came from. Ida, who works as a Danish teacher on a probationary period there, hears his screams and calls him a racist.

Lars tries to settle the argument with Ida with a bouquet of tulips. He succeeds, but she doesn't want to go out with him because she has just ended a long-term relationship. There are also problems at work. Her course is said to be canceled because there are not enough students due to El Hassan's absence. Lars then decides to come to the course incognito as El Hassan. He dyes his hair black, glues a mustache on to himself rather badly, and practices breaking a wheel in Danish.

In the course he gets to know the life of immigrants a little better and makes the acquaintance of Omid, an Iranian engineer who has already received 50 job rejections. When Lars received a job refusal over the phone during a course excursion, he explained it to Ida as El Hassan with the same words as Omid: He had the wrong name. Ida now wants to work for El Hassan at the company. Ida is arguing with Pelle, the printer's owner, when Lars appears there the next day. Ida accuses Pelle of being a racist and Lars that he would take the job away from someone in need.

When an employee decides because of the dispute that he no longer wants to work in the print shop, El Hassan gives Omid the job. Ida likes El Hassan's commitment to Omid and is otherwise drawn to El Hassan. After class they visit a pub together where Lars is a regular and Niels, Ida's ex, works as a barman. Since his mustache has fallen off again, Lars saves the situation by kissing Ida in front of Niel's eyes, then disappears into the bathroom to fix his mustache. His phone rings while he's in the bathroom. Ida answers the call to Lars and is cleared up about the mix-up by Lars' clerk from the employment agency. When he comes back from the bathroom, she runs away furiously. Niels, however, accuses El Hassan of stealing his wife. In a scramble, he knocks Niels down. He immediately visits Ida at home to apologize to her for being misled. He is desperate and intrusive, which worried neighbors use as an opportunity to tie up the immigrant. When Lars yells that he did everything out of love for Ida, she asks her neighbors to let him go.

Ultimately, a falling flagpole knocks Lars unconscious. Ida visits him in the hospital and everything ends happily.
