content

Hans Engler, a modest, reserved man, lives in Hamburg . He never married and has no family of his own, but lives with a married couple sublet in simple accommodation. It is on Hamburg's Reeperbahn , of all places , that Engler earns his bread as a waiter in a shabby “establishment”, in the middle of an environment in which the peaceful Engler doesn't really fit into. He usually avoids disputes; Engler knows that because of his slim figure, nobody in the rough neighborhood would take him seriously as an opponent. So he does his job every evening and stays out of everything else. Engler is valued by his colleagues and especially by the ladies of the house, precisely because he does not appear brutal, but always friendly and courteous.

One day it happens that the animator Agnes approaches Engler with the request to take over the paternity of her illegitimate daughter Martina. Agnes knows perfectly well that Engler will not be able to refuse her this favor. Hans Engler agrees, gets to know Martina and befriends his alleged daughter. Shortly afterwards, Agnes dies after a serious operation. Now the situation changes suddenly for Engler, because it is threatening. Agnes had not told him that Martina's real father is the brutal and ruthless pimp Albert Ruolof, who wants to make Martina his prostitute . But first Engler has to revoke paternity . Ruolof uses violence, brutally beats the defenseless Englishman, visits him at home and threatens him severely. He even threatens to beat him up for hospital next time in the pub, or, if need be, to kill him too. When the situation seems hopeless for Engler, a transformation takes place with him. He opposes Ruolof, rebukes him and draws attention to the legal situation that states that Engler is the father of 16-year-old Martina. Engler determined with determination that there was nothing to be shaken about and that if Ruolof wanted to, he should kill him now in front of everyone, after all, he would have announced it to everyone. Ruolof, however, looks down after the bar was as quiet as a mouse, pulls on his cigar and leaves the room defeated. Engler's appearance and unexpected resistance had become uncanny to him. For the barmaid Lizzy it is clear who will be the winner, from now on she calls Hans Engler the Little Giant .
