The curious garden ( English original title: The Curious Garden ) is a picture book by the American children's author and illustrator Peter Brown , the original edition of which was published in 2009 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. The German translation by Nils Aulike was published by Bohem Press in 2014 . The Curious Garden introduces children to the idea of urban gardening . Peter Brown was inspired by the Manhattan Highline in New York . The book deals with the topics of curiosity, courage, diligence and drive.

Little Liam grows up in a desolate, gray city. There are no trees or gardens there. That doesn't stop Liam from enjoying spending his free time outdoors. On one of his trips through the city, Liam discovers a few wildflowers and plants between the tracks on the disused elevated railway. Liam begins to water and care for the flowers and a short time later the garden begins to grow and spread over the entire railway line . Over the winter, Liam acquires additional gardening knowledge and acquires new gardening equipment. After winter, the garden finally spreads across the city. More and more people are joining Liam and enjoying gardening. Together they transform the city into a green and colorful place.

The New York Times Book Review devoted a detailed review to the "quiet wonderful illustrated book" in 2009. The ecological fable celebrates perseverance and creativity and encourages every little as well as every great person that they too can cultivate a piece of earth to their own vision of the Garden of Eden.

The daily newspaper Die Welt included the picture book in its selection of the most beautiful picture books of 2014. It is also included in the dpa list “Magical children's and young people's books with a serious background”.
