geography

The village is 940 m above sea level. M. and on the left side of the breggia . It is located in the highest part of the Muggio valley .

A footbridge leads from the village to Scudellate in Switzerland . The distance is about one kilometer. The closest Italian town is Casasco d'Intelvi, about six kilometers away . It forms the border between the Muggio Valley (or Valle di Muggio ) and the Val d'Intelvi .

history

prehistory

In the vicinity of Erbonne, flint was found in the Generosa cave , which indicates a settlement by Neanderthals 50,000 to 60,000 years ago. Remains of the extinct cave bear have also been found in the cave .

The discovery was made by the paleontologist Andrea Tintori from the University of Milan . They are of exceptional value as they document the presence of humans at an altitude of over 1,000 meters during the Würm glacial period (even if only sporadically). This can be explained by short-term fluctuations in temperature.

middle Ages

The village was part of the Duchy of Milan until the end of the fourteenth century . The inhabitants of Erbonne maintain the custom of driving cattle to Scudellate, regardless of the Italian-Swiss border in the sixteenth century.

Attractions

Museum of the Guardia di Finanza and Smuggling

The small museum is located in an abandoned Guardia di Finanza barracks at the exit of the village on the old route to Scudellate. The museum cannot be entered due to its small size. The exhibits are shown in showcases outside. Most date from the period when smuggling was a livelihood for the local people. This was sometimes fought with massive means by the police, but sometimes also tolerated.

The Erbonne foxhole

Not far from the village is the Fuchsloch (also called Den Erbonne), a cave with a length of 130 meters and a height of 16 meters. It is located at an altitude of 1,075 m. The cave is difficult to access, both because the entrance is on a steep slope and because of the small size of the entrance.

population

The last census in 2001 identified 15 residents. In August 2012 there were only 9 people living in the place.
