The black point
The black dot (also called The Black Spot ) is a fictional symbol invented by Robert Louis Stevenson for his novel Treasure Island .
Usually the black point is a dark spot on a light surface, such as a piece of paper or linen. If a pirate is shown a black dot, it is considered his death sentence or a message of imminent death. In Treasure Island , Long John Silver's team tries to spark a mutiny by handing over a black dot.
