EBL Regular Season 2009/10; National Trophy 2012

Derby Trailblazers Basketball Club is a basketball club from Derby in England . The club, founded in 2000, formed the substructure of youth teams and reserve teams for the professional basketball team Derby Storm . The Storm, founded in 1984 as Turbos , played for years under the name Rams , then Bucks and finally Storm in the closed professional league British Basketball League (BBL) before they finally ceased playing in 2002. The Trailblazers remained as a club and eventually reached the top English league "English Basketball League" (EBL) Division One, in which they won the 2010 championship.

history

Derby Turbos / Rams (1984 to 1991)

In 1984 a team was set up in Derby under the name Turbos, which should also take part in the national competitions of the "National Basketball League" (NBL). Under the Rams one reached 1986 admission to Division One of the NBL, where after four wins in 24 games they finished 13th and last place in the table in the 1986/87 season. Together with the Scottish club Murray BC Livingston , the teams of the NBL Division One then formed the closed British Basketball League in 1987 , in whose premier season the Rams also participated.

In the 15-team league, the Rams again achieved only four wins, but two teams were even worse, so that the Rams were only third-bottom in the 1987/88 season as 13th. In the following season four teams were eliminated from the league, but the Rams did not benefit from this because they finished tenth and penultimate place in the table after only three wins this season. Just as the Rams had a sporting crisis, the BBL had to accept a further decline in teams to just eight franchises for their third season . The Rams became more competitive in the smaller league and were fifth as "best of the rest" behind the four teams with a positive season record. In the play-offs reduced to four teams , however, this was not enough for participation in the final round. In the 1990/91 season, the BBL had a new addition, the Hemel Royals , without a franchise leaving the league, and the Rams were also able to consolidate themselves further by not showing a negative season balance for the first time at the end of the season. As fifth in the table with BBL top scorer Ernest Lee in their ranks, who scored almost 33 points per game, they were allowed to take part in the play-offs this time, in which they were eliminated in the first round against the Leicester City Riders . The Rams had successfully survived the turbulent early years of the BBL and their own athletic drought years.

Derby Bucks (1991 to 1995)

The Rams changed their name to Bucks in 1991 and in the 1991/92 season they had a positive season balance for the first time, with more wins than losses. The 18 wins in 30 games, however, again only reached fifth place in the league, which had grown to eleven teams, so that they were eliminated again in the first play-off round, this time against the London Towers . Against the same opponent they also lost in the first play-off round of the following season, where they won their first game in the “ postseason ” in the “ best-of-three ” series . In terms of sport, however, they suffered a setback when they were sixth in the table and had previously closed the season with a negative balance. The Bucks suffered from a lack of sponsorship support and signed off from league operations.

Shortly before the beginning of the 1993/94 season, the Bucks were "saved" when sponsors were still ready to support them and the league allowed late registration. Under these circumstances, the 17 wins in 36 games in eighth place in the table were to be seen as a success for the team. The Bucks that got rolling over the course of the season were then able to surprise the first Thames Valley Tigers in the first play-off round and won the first two games of the series. In the semifinals they then lost to defending champion Worthing Bears by two points. The 1994/95 season was, however, sporting rather sobering again when after only ten wins in 36 games they reached ninth place among 13 teams. For the first time since 1990 you did not take part in the postseason.

Derby Storm (1995 to 2002)

In 1995, a factory hall was taken over and converted into a sports facility called Thunderdome , making it the first BBL franchise to own its own home ground. The team also got a new company name as Storm and found their way back on the road to success when they finished fifth in the 1995/96 season with a positive season balance. However , they were eliminated in the first play-off round against the eventual title winner Birmingham Bullets . In the following season, however, the pendulum swung again and with a negative season record missed a win as ninth in the table to make it into the play-offs. In the 1997/98 season they won two more games, but that was enough to lead the second half of the table of the teams with a negative season record as seventh with 16 wins in 36 games. In the first play-off round they met again on the Bullets, to whom one could inflict their only post-season defeat in the "Best of Three" series, because in the end the Bullets won the play-offs again like two years before.

In the 1998/99 season, the Storm reached their first final game in a competition of the BBL. In the league cup BBL Trophy, however, they clearly lost in the title duel against the Manchester Giants with 69:90. In the league they could only improve by one place to sixth place, but with 21 wins in 36 games they had a positive season balance again. But they remained without a win in the postseason and lost in two games of the first round against the Thames Valley Tigers. The following season were introduced in the BBL Conferences , but the Storm reached in the Northern Conference with 17 wins in 36 games because of the poorer direct comparison against the Chester Jets only fifth place and thus again missed the play-offs. The Storm now missed the connection and occupied in the 2000/01 season with only six wins of the season, the penultimate place in the table, as the Edinburgh Rocks were even worse with only five wins. In the 2001/02 season it was then only enough to win three and the last place in the final table of the Northern Conference could no longer be avoided. The limited economic opportunities did not allow any meaningful game operation and the Storm were initially suspended for one year by the BBL, but did not return to the league after a year.

Derby Trailblazers (since 2000)

The Trailblazers were founded in 2000 to enable youth teams to compete with the best teams in England. In addition, you had a men's team that competed in the league system of the "National Basketball League" (NBL) and competed there with the Derbyshire Arrows from Killamarsh , which have their focus in the north in the region around Sheffield in South Yorkshire . After the introduction of the "English Basketball League" (EBL) in 2003, the Trailblazers, who play their home games in the Moorways Center, a former Storm venue, were promoted from the third division to the second division in 2005, which they won in 2007 won. After winning the championship, they played in Division One of the EBL and in 2009 set up the Derby Basketball Academy in cooperation with Derby College.

In the EBL Division One, the men's team won first place after the regular season in 2010, but lost the final game against runner-up Manchester Magic in the EBL play-offs. After not being able to place in the front field in the 2010/11 season, they won the EBL National Trophy League Cup in 2012 with a convincing 87:60 over their long-standing competitor Bristol Academy Flyers, with whom they were promoted to Division One in 2007. In the league you could move over to third place in the regular season in the play-off final, which this time was lost to the BA London Leopards . In the 2012/13 season they stumbled sportily and after only six wins of the season they finished 13th and penultimate place in the table in EBL Division One.
