Derek Briggs
Derek Ernest Gilmor Briggs (* 1950 ) is an Irish paleontologist who mainly deals with fossils from the Cambrian .
Briggs studied at the University of Cambridge , to 1977 Research Fellow at Sidney Sussex College where he was in 1974, with Harry Blackmore Whittington and Simon Conway Morris about the fossils from the famous fossil site of Burgess Shale from the Cambrian worked. Today he is considered one of the leading specialists in this.
1977 to 1985 he was at Goldsmiths College, University of London and 1985 to 2002 professor at the University of Bristol . In 2001/2002 he was visiting professor at the University of Chicago . He has been a professor at Yale University since 2003 , director of its Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies (since 2004) and curator of invertebrate paleontology at the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University, of which he has been director since 2008.
He also dealt experimentally with fossilization processes and the preservation conditions of soft tissues. With Euan Clarkson and Richard Aldridge , he published an essay on the identity of the conodont animal after soft tissue finds in the Carboniferous near Edinburgh in 1983 .
Briggs is a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society (1999) and since 2003 an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy . In 2001 he won the Boyle Medal of the Royal Dublin Society , in 2000 the Lyell Medal and the Premio Capo d´Orlando. In 2003 he became President of the Paleontological Society , which awarded him the Paleontological Society Medal in 2015 . From 2002 to 2004 he was President of the Palaeontological Association . He has been a corresponding member of the Paleontological Society since 2008 and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2019 .
