The Fleute Derfflinger was a ship of the Kurbrandenburg Navy , which was acquired in 1681 by the Dutch shipowner Benjamin Raule on behalf of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm . Until 1684 the ship sailed under the name Wolkensäule , in 1685 it was named after him in honor of the Prussian Field Marshal Georg von Derfflinger . The flute was 110 feet long (33.5 m), 23 feet wide (7 m) and had a lifting capacity of 170 loads (340 t). Her rigging consisted of a bowsprit , a fore and main mast with two square sails each and the mizzen mast with a latin sail . Their armament consisted of six to sixteen cannons, depending on the task at hand. Fifteen to twenty men are given as the regular crew.
From 1686 to 1693 the Derfflinger made trips to West Africa and India . In 1693 the ship was captured by a French pirate and then seized by an English frigate. The ship was returned to Prussia for a mountain fee and sold on in Emden the following year .
