Derrick B. Jelliffe

Derrick Brian Jelliffe (born January 20, 1921 in Chatham , † March 18, 1992 in Los Angeles ) was an English physician and expert in tropical pediatrics and child nutrition.

Life

Derrick Jelliffe was born in Chatham, England in 1921. He graduated from the University of London . Together with his wife Patrice Jelliffe (1920–2007) he lived and worked in developing countries for 24 years. He campaigned for public health and touted the benefits of breastfeeding . He was Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1972 he was appointed to the UCLA School of Public Health, where he established the Department of Population and Family Health . He was the founding director of UCLA's international health program, launched in 1990, and established the first faculty of child health and pedriatry in East Africa at Makerere University in Uganda. He has served as a consultant to UNICEF , the World Health Organization and the National Academy of Science .

Together with his wife, who was a lecturer and research assistant at the UCLA School of Public Health, Jelliffe published 22 books aimed at nurses and midwives. He is the author of hundreds of papers on developing countries and was editor of the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics .

Jelliffe died of a heart attack at the age of 71.

• 1979 Wihuri International Prize of the Finnish organization Wihuri Foundation for International Prizes.
