Des Meeres und der Liebe Waves is a German silent film drama from 1912 with Lissi Nebuschka in the leading role.
action
The story takes place somewhere in Spain: Venila, the daughter of a Spanish captain, has fallen in love with the sailor Pietro. The captain illegally transports gunpowder to Scotland on his ship without his insurance being aware of it. The jealous first mate steals the insurance policy and sets the ship on fire. The captain then committed suicide while Venila and her lover escape on a raft.
They are driven to the shores of the island of Urk, where the villainous first mate eventually lands. Some island fishermen rescue the stranded and dress Venila in the typical national costume of an Urk woman. The first mate didn't live long and handed Venila the insurance policy on his deathbed. With the sum of money received thanks to this policy, she can finally marry Pietro. After their wedding in the midst of the Urk residents, they cast off and sail home towards Spain.
Production notes
The external shoots of Des Meeres und der Liebe Waves began in Italy. In November 1912, producer and director Christoph Mülleneisen junior came to Volendam in the Netherlands to finish the story - Volendam became the fantasy island Urk. The three-act act was censored in December 1912 and may have premiered that same year.
The year before, a film of the same name with different content was made with Henny Porten in the lead role.
