The Desert Uplands are an Australian Interim Biogeographic Regionalization for Australia Bioregion , which lies between the North and Central West regions of Queensland . The region spans the Great Dividing Range between Blackall and Pentland . Lake Galilee , Lake Dunn and Lake Buchanan are in the bioregion . There is a semi-arid climate with strongly changing rainfall. Much of the area is used for cattle breeding and is part of the Great Artesian Basin , which lies between the Galilee and Eromanga Basins . The Brigalow Belt North and Brigalow Belt South lie in the east of the bioregion, and the Einasleigh Uplands in the north .

Settlements

The two main settlements in the region are Barcaldine and Aramac .

There is Spinifex grass everywhere. More than 80 different herbs are found in the bioregion. In 2003 it was estimated that 13 million trees are felled each year in the bioregion. This means that the proportion of deforested area is 6.8%, the third highest proportion of all bioregions in Queensland.

Waters

The region's major rivers are the Belyando River , Cape River , Campaspe River , Barcoo River , Alice River , Aramac, and Torrens Creek . There are also the Lake Galilee and Lake Buchanan salt flats in the region.
