Life

Detlef Sammann was born on February 28, 1857 in Westerhever. He was apprenticed to a painter, after which he began to work as a fresco painter in Dresden in his youth. During his time in Dresden, Sammann was a student of Wilhelm Ritter for four years . In 1881 Sammann embarked for New York , where he initially worked as an interior decorator and mural painter. In 1898 he moved to California for health reasons . Sammann was active in San Diego and San Francisco for two years , but then moved to Pasadena . The numerous frescoes that Sammann painted in the local concern are examples of the German Rococo style. When he retired in 1912, he moved to Pebble Beach and adopted an Impressionist style. Inspired by the regional scenery, he painted landscapes, coastlines and lake portraits. Sammann spent four years in this place, but returned to Dresden in 1921 because he was homesick. He died on May 25, 1938.
