Detlev Kommer (* 1947 in Mannheim ; † July 24, 2005 in Berlin ) was a German psychotherapist and founding president of the Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists .

Career

Detlev Kommer attended the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim and passed the Abitur there in 1966 . Kommer then began studying psychology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , from which he graduated as a qualified psychologist . During his subsequent long-term clinical and scientific work at the University of Heidelberg, he published numerous articles on clinical psychology , but also on professional political and legal topics such as the psychiatry reform or the prospects of the not yet independent profession of psychotherapist. In this way he developed a reputation as an expert on both technical and legal matters relating to the field of psychotherapy .

As part of the realignment of the health professional chamber laws of the countries and in force since 1999 and co-designed by him psychotherapists law initiated Kommer late 1990s, the establishment of statutory psychotherapists chambers . In autumn 2001 he was elected the first president of the newly founded Baden-Württemberg State Chamber of Psychotherapists. Within the working group of the regional chambers, he then pushed ahead with the establishment of a federal chamber of psychotherapists, which was ultimately founded in May 2003 and for which he was a candidate and was elected with a large majority despite his controversial positions. He was president of both chambers until his death.

Positions

Kommer was seen as a decided representative of the behavior therapy school and, in his role as chamber president, was critical of psychotherapy based on depth psychology and, above all, psychoanalysis , which was often criticized by chamber members and supporters of different schools. At the same time, he tried to work to overcome the boundaries between the individual therapy methods and to bring the common interests of the psychotherapist both internally and externally to the fore. In doing so, he made a significant contribution to establishing the profession as an independent academic medical profession and making himself heard in politics and the public.

death

Detlev Kommer died unexpectedly on July 24, 2005 of an infection as a result of a heart attack. He was married and had three children.
