Villemereuil is a French commune with 247 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aube department in the Grand Est region (before 2016 Champagne-Ardenne ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Troyes and the canton of Les Riceys (until 2015 the canton of Bouilly ). The inhabitants call themselves Villemereuillois (es) .
geography
The municipality is located about 11 kilometers south of Troyes in the south of the Aube department. The municipality consists of the villages of Bierne and Villemereuil. Neighboring municipalities are Moussey in the north, Isle-Aumont in the north-east, Les Bordes-Aumont in the east and south-east, Villy-le-Bois in the south, Villy-le-Maréchal in the south-west and west, Roncenay in the west and Saint-Pouange in the north-west.
history
The place is first mentioned in 1172 under the Latin name Villa Maruil in a document from Molême Abbey. A first French form appears as Vilemerel in a document from 1219. Villemereuil was part of the bailiwick (Bailliage) Troyes. Until the French Revolution , the municipality was in the province of Champagne . From 1793 to 1801 Villemereuil was assigned to the District of Troyes and the Canton of Isles. From 1801 to 2015, the municipality was in the canton of Bouilly and has been part of the canton of Les Riceys ever since. Villemereuil has been part of the Troyes arrondissement since 1801. Between 1795 and 1800 the previously independent municipality of Bierne was incorporated.

traffic
Villemereuil is not far from important national traffic routes. There have been no stopping points or train connections in the municipality since 1996. At that time, the line from Troyes to Saint-Florentin was closed. Troyes has good transport links by rail and bus. The E54 passes a few kilometers north . The closest connection is in Saint-Thibault. The D25 and D123, which run through the two villages, are important for regional traffic.
