Assenay is a French commune with 146 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aube department in the Grand Est region (before 2016 Champagne-Ardenne ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Troyes and the canton of Les Riceys (until 2015 the canton of Bouilly ). The inhabitants call themselves Asnacussiens / Asnacussiennes .
geography
The municipality is located about 13 kilometers south of Troyes in the south of the Aube department. The Mogne , a small river, forms the municipal boundary in parts. Neighboring municipalities are Villy-le-Maréchal in the northeast and east, Villy-le-Bois in the east and southeast, Saint-Jean-de-Bonneval in the southwest and west and Roncenay in the northwest.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century under the Latin name Ascenaium . A first French form appears as Acenay in a document from 1200. Assenay was part of the Vogtei (Bailliage) Troyes. Until the French Revolution , the municipality was in the province of Champagne . From 1793 to 1801 Assenay was assigned to the district of Ervy and the canton of Saint Jean de Bonneval. From 1801 to 2015, the municipality was in the canton of Bouilly and has been part of the canton of Les Riceys ever since. Assenay has been part of the Troyes arrondissement since 1801.

traffic
Assenay is not far from important national traffic routes. A stop and train connections have not existed in the municipality since 1996. At that time, the line from Troyes to Saint-Florentin was closed. Troyes has good transport links by rail and bus. The E54 passes a few kilometers north . The closest connection is in Saint-Thibault. The D25 and D123, which run through the village, are important for regional traffic.
