Saint-Jean-de-Bonneval is a French commune with 396 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aube department in the Grand Est region (before 2016 Champagne-Ardenne ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Troyes and the canton of Les Riceys (until 2015 the canton of Bouilly ). The inhabitants call themselves Bonnevalois (es) .
geography
The municipality is located about 14 kilometers south of Troyes in the south of the Aube department. The community consists of the villages of Prunay and Saint-Jean-de-Bonneval, several hamlets and a few individual farms. The Mogne , a small river, forms the municipal boundary in parts. Neighboring municipalities are Roncenay in the north, Assenay in the northeast and east, Villy-le-Bois in the east, Longeville-sur-Mogne in the southeast, Lirey in the southwest and west and Villery in the northwest.
history
A Roman road led along today's municipal boundary to Villery. But so far no finds from this time have been made.
The current place is mentioned for the first time in 754 under the Latin name Bonavallis in a document from the Abbey of Montier-la-Celle. A first French form appears as Saint Jehan de Bonnevaulx in a document from 1328. Saint-Jean-de-Bonneval was part of the bailiwick (Bailliage) Troyes. Until the French Revolution , the municipality was in the province of Champagne . From 1793 to 1801 Saint-Jean-de-Bonneval was assigned to the Ervy district and the capital of the canton of Saint Jean de Bonneval. From 1801 to 2015, the municipality was in the canton of Bouilly and has been part of the canton of Les Riceys ever since. Saint-Jean-de-Bonneval has been part of the Troyes arrondissement since 1801. In 1908 the previously independent municipality of Prunay-Saint-Jean was incorporated.

traffic
Saint-Jean-de-Bonneval is not far from major national traffic routes. A stop and train connections have not existed in the municipality since 1996. At that time, the line from Troyes to Saint-Florentin was closed. Troyes has good transport links by rail and bus. The E54 passes a few kilometers north . The closest connection is in Saint-Thibault. The D25 and D108, which run right through the village, are important for regional traffic.
