Essoyes is a French commune with 715 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aube department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the canton of Bar-sur-Seine and the Arrondissement of Troyes .

geography

The municipality is located 50 kilometers south of Troyes on the banks of the Ource , a tributary of the Seine .

history

The settlement area on the banks of the Ource has been inhabited since Celtic times. Traces of the earliest inhabitants of the place Essoye (so the original spelling) are documented for the 11th century. Towards the end of the 11th century, Count Walter I of Brienne donated the Church of Essoyes to Molesme Abbey . In addition to viticulture, several mills ensured the town's economic situation for a long time. In addition, paper production came from the middle of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century. On March 12, 1763, a fire destroyed most of the town's half-timbered buildings. The Romanesque church of Saint-Rémi was demolished in 1855. Today's church was built in its place by 1865, and was built mainly through donations from the entrepreneurial family Hériot. Auguste Hériot , born in Essoyes, founded the Parisian department store Grands Magasins du Louvre . His son Olympe Hériot acquired and expanded the Chateau d'Essoyes at the end of the 19th century. After the municipality acquired the building in 1936, the local school and exhibition rooms are now housed here.

Renoir in Essoyes

In 1885 the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir first visited Essoyes, the birthplace of his future wife Aline Charigot. In the following years he visited the place repeatedly and chose motifs from the surrounding landscape for his paintings. In December 1895 he bought a house in Essoyes and from then on spent several months each year in his wife's home. After his wife was buried in the local cemetery in 1915, Renoir, who died in his house in Cagnes-sur-Mer , also found his final resting place on the Cimetière d'Essoyes. Renoir's home in Essoyes is still family-owned to this day. The garden and his studio can be visited.

Attractions

In addition to the places where Renoir worked in Essoyes, the Maison de la Vigne wine museum in the former castle of the Hériot family is one of the tourist attractions of Essoyes. In addition to Renoir and his wife, both sons, the actor Pierre Renoir and the film director Jean Renoir , are buried in the cemetery. The graves of the entrepreneurial family Hériot can also be found here.
