Detlev W. Belling

Detlev W. Belling (born June 2, 1952 in Berlin ) is a German law scholar and former professor at the University of Potsdam .

Life

Belling studied law at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Illinois , USA. On the basis of his doctoral thesis on “The Principle of Favorability in Labor Law” (1984), which was supervised by Wilfried Schlüter , he received his doctorate from the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

The habilitation took place on October 31, 1989 at the Faculty of Law at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster. His post-doctoral thesis deals with “The liability of the works council towards employees and employers” (1990). In 1990 he was appointed university professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Institute for Labor Law and Social Security Law. From 1991 to 2018 he held the chair for civil law, labor and social law at the University of Potsdam. From October 1, 1999 to September 30, 2000, he was Dean of the Faculty of Law. His academic work includes German and foreign-language works from constitutional law, civil law, company law and individual and collective labor law; one focus is on church labor law. He coordinated the course "German Law: The German School of Law with Training as a Specialist Translator" at the Universities of Szeged (Hungary) and Potsdam. The University of Szeged awarded him an honorary doctorate (doctor honoris causa) in 2011 . He is Vice President of the Court of Arbitration of the German-Turkish Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK).

He is voluntary in the Evangelical Church and its diakonia: He is director of the Evangelical Institute for Canon Law at the University of Potsdam and since 2005 chairman of the general assembly of the Diakonisches Werk Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia; as such he belongs to the Diaconal Council. In the State Committee for Internal Mission aV (LAFIM) he is chairman of the Board of Trustees, in the LAFIM - State Committee for Internal Mission - Services for People Charitable AG the office of Chairman of the Supervisory Board. In the legislative period 2006 - 2008 he was an appointed member of the regional synod and member of the church leadership of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia.

In 2014, Belling was the subject of numerous press articles when he filed a criminal complaint against a student for libel and defamation . He had reported the student because she had covered him with vulgar abuse as a result of a law of obligations exam at the end of the winter semester . A few days later, Belling withdrew his complaint.
