German Chapel (Dobratsch)
The German Chapel stands 2159 m above sea level on the Dobratsch in the Bad Bleiberg community and is consecrated to Maria am heiligen Stein . It is a branch church of the Roman Catholic parish Bad Bleiberg . The name "German Chapel" is used to distinguish it from the Windische Kapelle , the second mountain church on the Dobratsch.
According to legend, the construction of the church was preceded by an apparition of Mary . Maria is said to have appeared to a Bleiberger trade or to a shepherd in need sitting on a stone. The builders of the first chapel, consecrated on August 15, 1693, are therefore either Bleiberger crafts or miners from Bleiberg-Kreuth and the farmers from the Villach upper villages. In 1731 the original wooden chapel was replaced by a brick one, which was only consecrated in 1853.
The simple, small building consists of a nave with a flat ceiling and a barrel-vaulted choir with a 5/8 end . In the northern corner of the choir there is a small tower with a shingle- covered pyramid roof .
The altar marked “1690” and “1855” was restored in 1992.
